Alex Buono

Alex has been Director of Photography for the Saturday Night Live Film Unit for 15 seasons. He shot, wrote and produced an award-winning critically acclaimed Sundance-documentary, "Bigger Stronger Faster" and received an Oscar-nomination for a short film called "Johnny Flynton," He also shot and produced "Green Street Hooligans" starring Elijah Wood and Charlie Hunnam.
"I use G-RAIDs and G-DRIVEs on set. My team downloads CF cards to G-RAIDs to transfer our footage to our edit suite. Our suite is setup on a server so we do not edit directly from G-Technology drives. For future independent projects I plan to use the G-Technology towers with up to 4TB of storage."
Born and raised in Portland, Oregon, Alex attended the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts, majoring in film production and still photography. His early years were spent on the camera crews of studio films including "Twister," "Conspiracy Theory," and "Armageddon," learning from top ASC cinematographers. Alex has grown to become a full-time cinematographer of indie films, music videos, and has served as the Director of Photography for NBC’s "Saturday Night Live" for 13 years.
In 2003, Alex received an Oscar Nomination for the short film "Johnny Flynton," which he shot and produced. Alex repeated the dual role of cinematographer and co-producer on "Green Street Hooligans" about London's football-gang subculture starring Elijah Wood, winning both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at the 2005 South By Southwest Film Festival. Alex wrote, produced and shot the documentary feature "Bigger Stronger Faster" about steroid use in professional sports, which premiered in competition at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival and was distributed theatrically.
In 2009, Alex started experimenting with the HDSLR format for SNL, shooting the show's title sequence and most of the season's commercial parodies with a new generation of smaller more powerful cameras and utilizing G-Technology storage for his field acquisition. Alex is a member of the Writer's Guild of America, the International Documentary Association and the International Cinematographer's Guild. He lives in Venice, California with his wife and son where he continues to write, produce, and shoot for his production company, Third Person.
